Thursday Sessions

    Welcome from OCTE and introduction to the resources we offer to support Technological Education promotion and education in schools. Co-facilitated by our CTMA industry partner, through our student panel you will learn from current apprentices about their journey through the application and training process. Additionally students will share information that they wish they knew before pursuing the apprenticeship pathway.

    Learn from employers that are currently working with Apprentices about the process, the skills they are looking for and future opportunities in their industries.

  • Presenters: OYAP Recruiters
    What apprenticeships are available and what do students need? What else is out there to help me speak to students that want to do an apprenticeship?

  • Presenters: Lee Ann Armstrong, Hamilton-Wentworth DSB, Vanessa DiMarcelli, London District Catholic SB & Sharon Devries, Thames Valley DSB
    How can we promote the apprenticeship pathway equitably for all students? This is an experiential opportunity to challenge our own thinking and develop ideas to promote skilled trades with students.

  • Presenters: Donna Norrie, Halton DSB & Jody Jakubo, Rainbow DSB
    Review the value of establishing solid relationships with your technological education teachers and co-op teachers to support students along the apprenticeship pathway. Learn about some events that have taken place in Ontario school boards to promote skilled trades to staff, parents and students. Resources will be provided.

    This workshop will showcase various ways to engage students, parents and the community in the skilled trades through OYAP. Exciting board-wide initiatives will be shared that will highlight specific strategies and opportunities to bring students, families and the community together to learn about the apprenticeship pathway. This workshop will also include a hands-on activity.

    Through this session, you will have the opportunity to discuss, reflect and make plans to implement the new resources you have been introduced to you through this conference back at your school. Network with other guidance counsellors to share ideas to take skilled trades opportunities for your students to the next level.

  • Learn more about the construction career opportunities and apprenticeships offered through LIUNA, tour the facilities and engage in an activity related to the work your students who pursue this pathway would perform.

  • Learn more about the electrical trades through a tour of the IBEW and Virtual Reality experience. Tomorrow's Trades will also provide information about their programming for students wishing to pursue the skilled trades in construction.

  • Please join us on a tour of a manufacturing industry partner Armo Tool which is a Automation and Fabrication Facility to learn more about the skilled trades and opportunities in this sector.

  • This tour of London Transit will introduce you to the skilled trades and technology careers available in the transit industry.

  • Please join us on a tour of Western Fair District to learn more about the skilled trades and opportunities in this sector. This will involve a tour of the grove and Top of the Fair Restaurant.
